The Starter Wife, starring Debra Messing, airs its season finale tonight on USA Cable Network. The delightful light comedy is a fantasy romp exposing some of the reality of life in Hollywood and the people involved in the powerful entertainment, television and movie industry. The Starter Wife cast includes Joe Mantegna, David Alan Basche, Judy Davis, Chris Diamontopoulos and Hart Bochner.
Season One a Comedic Romance Roller Coaster
In the season finale, Molly Kagen (Debra Messing) attends the wedding of former lover and Hollywood powerhouse Lou Manahan (Joe Mantegna). In the 2007 miniseries Molly teamed up with Manahan in poking fun at the Hollywood players. Amazingly, Molly chose a beach bum over Manahan in the strange love triangle.
Manahan accidentally declared his love for Molly in an earlier episode this season while practicing his proposal to another woman. Later Molly discovered that the woman was deceiving Lou about her identity. When the truth came out, the couple decided that they really did love each other, with Molly’s generous blessing.
The season has been a roller coaster. Ex-husband Kenny Kagen (David Alan Basche) declared that he was sorry that he divorced Molly, but she had moved on to new lover Zach (Hart Bochner).
Kenny Kagen proceeds to fall in love with the actress hired to portray Molly in the movie about their high profile life and divorce.. Friend and gay interior designer Rodney (Chris Diamontopoulos) has started a love affair with a macho movie star. In the last episode reporters outed the closeted gay couple. Friend Joan McAllister (Judy Davis) left her rich older husband while on a worldwide cruise for a movie star she met when the recovering alcoholic was working as a counselor in a rehab facility. Subsequently, Joan's husband was found dead under suspicious circumstances.
Who will End up Alone?
According to the premiere previews, one of these couples will end up alone. The episode promises to feature at least one of their trademark fantasy scenes, in which Messing demonstrates her diverse comedic talents as she recreates scenes from popular classic movies, such as Dirty Harry, Hello Molly and Basic Instinct.
