When Bikers come to South Park, the townspeople call them vulgar names to get them to leave. This week's episode was not only funny, but also gave us a history lesson.
The boys are trying to enjoy a peaceful afternoon in South Park. However, the bikers want nothing more than to make as much noise as possible so everyone will notice them. The boys keep referring to the bikers as the F word (the one that rhymes with bag). Although this word is usually used as an insult against gay people, the boys believe that just because somebody is gay doesn’t mean they are the F word. The bikers are trying to figure out why everybody keeps calling them the F word, so they do some research. The F Word Has Many MeaningsThe bikers find out that the F word has had many different meanings dating back to the late 16th century when it meant “an old or unpleasant woman.” While it seemed like South Park was bashing gays for the first 10 minutes of the episode, they were actually using the word to describe obnoxious bikers, and not calling them gay at all. Over the course of time, the word has been used to describe a bundle of sticks, poor people, old people and woman. However, today the word takes on a new meaning and is no longer acceptable to say. In order to differentiate between the F word and gay, the boys try to influence the writers of the dictionary to change the meaning of the F word. Even gay people such as Big Gay Al and Mr. Slave want the meaning of the word changed to describe obnoxious bikers because it’s just too much fun to say. Butters Stands Up For the BikersEarlier in the episode, Butters commented on how cool Harleys are. Yet he was never again shown in the episode, until the very end. When the bikers are about to kill the boys for calling them the F word, Butters tries to explains that bikers aren’t loud and obnoxious for the sake of being loud and obnoxious. They are a symbol of freedom and individuality. However, the bikers quickly dismiss Butters’ argument and learn to accept that they are now the F word. The editor of the dictionary proclaims that the F word will now be used to describe Harley riders. There is even a dictionary excerpt at the end of the episode that describes the F word as “an extremely annoying, inconsiderate, person most commonly associated with Harley riders.” As much as everyone would like to see the word mean something else other than an offensive word against gay people, it seems unlikely that South Park will be able to change people’s minds. South Park has made fun of itself for being preachy and trying to deliver messages in all of their episodes. However, this time it seems like they really think that they will be able to change the way an entire country thinks because of their show. These newer episodes have not been shy on calling people, or in many cases reality TV shows out. It is a good change of pace, but it may get tiring after a few more episodes.
